The best motion design studios of 2026 compared by price tier

TL;DR: A 60-second motion piece costs $3,000 - $25,000+ depending on tier. Under $3,000 gets templated 2D. $3,000 - $10,000 gets fully custom 2D, where most B2B SaaS work should sit. Above $25,000 buys signature art direction. Subscriptions like Superside run $5,000 - $13,000 a month for volume. Below: twelve studios grouped by what each is actually for, including ours - we have shipped 27 motion pieces for clients including Discord, Epidemic Sound and Lovable.

How to Read This List

Full disclosure before anything else: this is our list, and we are on it - first. You should factor that in. What we can do is be specific about our own work rather than vague, be accurate about everyone else, and say plainly where another studio on this list will serve you better. There are several, and we name them.

We are also not ranking one to twelve. Studios here operate in different tiers with different cost structures, and ranking a $2,500 explainer shop against a $50,000 brand film studio helps nobody. The list is grouped by what each studio is for.

Motion is a category where the tier gap is unusually visible. A $2,500 explainer and a $25,000 one are not the same product with different polish - they are different processes producing different things. Understanding that gap is most of what this list is for.

Pricing here reflects publicly available figures as of August 2026 and should be verified before you commit.

What Actually Drives Motion Design Cost

Before comparing studios, understand what you are paying for. Motion pricing is driven by four things, and only one of them is visible in the final video.

Custom versus templated assets. The single biggest cost lever. Templated 2D reuses existing rigs, character sets and transitions. Fully custom means every asset is drawn for you. This is the difference between the sub-$3,000 tier and everything above it.

Character animation. Characters that move believably are expensive - rigging, timing and cleanup are all specialist work. Motion with characters typically costs two to three times equivalent-length abstract or UI-based motion.

Script and storyboard development. Often half the value and almost none of the visible output. A studio that develops the narrative with you costs more than one that animates a script you supply, and for most SaaS explainers the narrative is where the piece succeeds or fails.

Revision structure. Cheap tiers limit revisions tightly because revisions are where margin disappears. Check how many rounds are included and at which stages - a revision after animation begins costs vastly more than one at storyboard.

The practical implication: lock the script and storyboard before animation starts. Almost every motion project that goes over budget does so because direction changed after assets were built. Our motion graphics guide for startups covers how to brief this properly.

The Price Tiers

Tier Cost (60 sec) What you get
Budget / AI-assistedUnder $3,000Templated 2D, limited customisation, minimal script development
Mid-market$3,000 - $10,000Fully custom 2D animation, real storyboarding, defined revision rounds
Custom studio$5,000 - $30,000Narrative development, custom art direction, character work, sound design
Premium / brand film$25,000+Signature art direction, complex character animation, original score
Subscription$5,000 - $13,000/moOngoing volume across many assets rather than one flagship piece
Freelance$2,000 - $8,000Can equal mid-tier studio quality if you can brief and direct well

Most B2B SaaS motion lands in the $5,000 - $15,000 range at traditional studios. If you are being quoted far outside that for a standard explainer, ask what specifically accounts for the difference.

The Studios

Elysium Designs

Ours. We run a dedicated motion team that takes standalone projects - motion is a practice here, not an add-on to product work.

The portfolio is 27 motion pieces for clients including Discord, Epidemic Sound, Lovable, Novu, Unkey, Curvance, Linera, Hive, Kontext and Arc Robotics. That is the relevant evidence, and it is public in our Labs.

Where we are genuinely differentiated is the option most studios cannot offer: we will do your motion as a standalone engagement, or design it alongside your product and brand so a launch video, a UI animation and a marketing site all read as the same company. Coherence across surfaces is hard to buy from a studio that has never seen your product - and it is optional, not a condition of working with us.

Right for: B2B SaaS and AI companies wanting product-literate motion - launch films, product demos, UI motion and brand animation - as a standalone project or integrated with product and brand work.
Wrong for: Character-led narrative brand films, where Giant Ant or Ordinary Folk are the specialists. High-volume ad cutdowns at scale, where a subscription like Superside is more economical.

Giant Ant

Widely regarded as one of the strongest character animation studios working. Premium pricing, distinctive craft, strong narrative sensibility.

Right for: Brand films and flagship pieces where the animation itself is the differentiator and budget is not the binding constraint.
Wrong for: Routine product explainers, or anyone needing volume.

Buck

Large global studio known for high-end commercial and brand motion with major clients.

Right for: Enterprise brand campaigns needing scale and a recognised name.
Wrong for: Startups. The engagement scale assumes budgets most funded startups do not have.

Yans Media

Focused on startups and SMBs with narrative-driven work, typically $3,500 - $8,500.

Right for: Startups wanting a properly custom explainer with real story development at a predictable price.
Wrong for: Character-heavy brand films or teams needing ongoing volume.

Yum Yum Videos

SaaS-focused explainer studio producing custom animation at predictable prices.

Right for: B2B SaaS companies wanting a straightforward, well-executed product explainer.
Wrong for: Distinctive art direction. The strength is reliability, not surprise.

Explainify

Specialises in clarity-first explainer work, oriented around making complex propositions understandable quickly.

Right for: Companies whose core problem is that nobody understands what they do.
Wrong for: Brand-led work where emotional resonance matters more than comprehension.

Demo Duck

Produces explainer and brand video across animation and live action.

Right for: Teams wanting one partner across both animated and filmed content.
Wrong for: Purely animation-led briefs where a specialist studio goes deeper.

Wyzowl

High-volume explainer studio with fixed-price packages covering all production stages.

Right for: Teams who want a known price and a defined process with no scoping ambiguity.
Wrong for: Bespoke art direction, since the model depends on process standardisation.

Gisteo

Budget-conscious explainer production, with demo videos from around $2,000 and animated explainers from about $2,500.

Right for: Early-stage companies who need something decent quickly and cannot justify $10,000.
Wrong for: Anything that needs to look distinctive rather than competent.

Superside

Subscription creative operations including motion, roughly $5,000 - $13,000 a month, typically on an annual commitment.

Right for: Companies with sustained volume across many motion assets - ads, social cuts, product updates.
Wrong for: A single flagship piece. Paying a monthly subscription for one video is poor value. We cover the model's trade-offs in design subscription vs design agency.

Ordinary Folk

Boutique studio with a strong reputation for craft-forward animation and distinctive direction.

Right for: Brands wanting work with a clear point of view rather than category-standard output.
Wrong for: Tight budgets or fast turnarounds.

Strong freelancers

Not a studio, but genuinely competitive. Experienced animators found via Motion Hatch, Behance or Dribbble charge roughly $2,000 - $8,000 for a 60-second piece and can produce work equal to a mid-tier studio.

Right for: Teams with a clear script and someone able to art-direct. The savings are real when you can supply direction.
Wrong for: Teams needing narrative development, project management, or guaranteed availability. You are absorbing the producer role.

How to Brief and Choose

Motion projects fail for predictable reasons. These questions surface most of them.

  • "What is included at each revision stage, and what costs extra?" Get the boundary in writing. Changes after animation begins are the main source of overruns.
  • "Do you develop the script, or animate ours?" A large price difference hides here, and it is the part that determines whether the video works.
  • "Can I see the storyboard before animation starts?" Non-negotiable. Approving a storyboard is cheap; changing direction afterwards is not.
  • "Who does the sound design?" Frequently excluded and frequently the difference between adequate and good.
  • "What do we own at the end?" Source files, or just exports? If you want to cut a fifteen-second version for ads later, you need the project files.

One more piece of advice worth more than studio selection: be clear about what the video is for. A homepage explainer, a sales-deck demo, a paid-ad hook and a conference loop are four different pieces. Studios asked to make one video that does all four produce something that does none of them well.

Conclusion

Set the budget tier first. Under $3,000 accept templated work. $3,000 - $10,000 is the sweet spot for custom B2B SaaS explainers and where most companies should be. Above $25,000 you are buying signature art direction, which is worth it for brand films and rarely for product explainers.

Character-led brand film: Giant Ant, Buck or Ordinary Folk. Startup explainer with real story development: Yans Media. SaaS explainer at a predictable price: Yum Yum Videos, Wyzowl or Explainify. Tight budget: Gisteo or a strong freelancer. Sustained ad volume: Superside.

And if you want product-literate motion from a team that has shipped 27 pieces for companies like Discord, Epidemic Sound and Lovable - standalone, or built to sit inside your product and brand - tell us what you are launching.
