The best product design agencies of 2026 compared by tier and price

TL;DR: Product design agencies split into tiers that barely compete. Pentagram, Work & Co, Huge and Instrument operate at $100,000+. MetaLab, Clay and Ramotion sit at $50,000 - $200,000. Boutique studios - including ours - work at $8,000 - $25,000 for seed to Series A, with dedicated product, brand and motion teams. Subscriptions like Awesomic start near $500 a month for a very different kind of output. Pick your tier by budget floor first.

How to Read This List

Full disclosure: this is our list and we are on it, first. Factor that in. What we can do is be specific about our own work rather than vague, be accurate about everyone else, and name the studios that will serve you better than we will. There are several here and we say which.

We are also not ranking one to twelve. These studios sit in tiers separated by an order of magnitude in price, and ranking a $200,000 studio against a $15,000 one helps nobody decide. The list is grouped by what each is for.

The most useful thing a list like this can do is disqualify options quickly. Twelve agencies is not a shortlist - two is.

Pricing in this industry moves constantly and is often unpublished. Figures here are the best available as of August 2026 and should be verified, not quoted from.

The Three Tiers, and Why They Matter More Than Rankings

Product design agencies do not sit on a single quality ladder. They occupy tiers with different cost structures, different clients, and genuinely different work. Ranking them against each other is close to meaningless - a $200,000 studio is not "better" than a $15,000 one in a way that helps you decide.

Enterprise tier ($100,000+). Pentagram, Work & Co, Huge, Instrument. Large teams, deep research programmes, multi-month engagements, and processes built for organisations with their own product and design departments. Exceptional at what they do. Structurally unable to serve a seed-stage company well.

Premium product tier ($50,000 - $200,000). MetaLab, Clay, Ramotion. Flagship product and brand work for funded companies. Small enough to be hands-on, established enough to carry weight with a board.

Boutique tier ($8,000 - $25,000 per project, or $6,000 - $12,000 a month). Where most seed and Series A companies should be looking. Senior people doing the work directly, less process overhead, faster cycles.

Subscription and productised ($500 - $5,000 a month). Awesomic, Eleken and similar. Sells throughput rather than judgement, which is the right purchase for some situations and the wrong one for others.

Your budget floor determines your tier, and your tier determines your shortlist. Everything after that is fit. Our 2026 cost breakdown covers what each tier realistically buys.

The Studios

Elysium Designs

Ours. A boutique studio for seed to Series A B2B SaaS and AI companies - projects $8,000 - $25,000, retainers $6,000 - $12,000 a month, with dedicated product, brand and motion teams rather than one generalist pool.

Our through-line is products where the design problem is comprehension and trust rather than decoration. Factory AI was about making autonomous engineering feel safe to trust. Highflyers was about making executive search feel like a system rather than disconnected screens. Jether was about making complexity feel manageable.

What we can do that most studios in our tier cannot is carry one coherent design decision across product, brand, website and motion - ten brand identities and 27 motion pieces for clients including Discord, Epidemic Sound and Lovable sit alongside the product work in our Labs. Each of those is available as a standalone engagement; the integration is an option, not a condition of working with us.

Right for: Seed to Series A B2B SaaS and AI companies with technically substantial products that need to feel coherent and trustworthy, at boutique pricing with senior people doing the work.
Wrong for: Enterprise programmes needing large multi-team engagements and formal research operations - Clay, Work & Co or MetaLab are genuinely better suited. High-volume asset production, where a subscription costs less and serves you better.

MetaLab

The best-known product design studio in the world, having built interfaces for Slack and Coinbase among others. Consumer-grade craft that very few studios match.

Right for: Well-funded companies needing flagship product design, and teams for whom the name itself carries internal weight.
Wrong for: Anyone under roughly $100,000, and early-stage companies who will not be priority clients.

Work & Co

Enterprise digital product studio known for large-scale consumer platforms and long engagements with major brands.

Right for: Enterprises rebuilding a core digital product with a substantial budget and internal teams to hand off to.
Wrong for: Startups. The engagement model assumes organisational scale you probably do not have.

Instrument

Portland studio working across brand and digital product, with a strong reputation for craft-led work with large technology clients.

Right for: Established companies wanting brand and product handled with equal seriousness.
Wrong for: Small budgets, or narrow product-UX-only scopes.

Clay

New York studio founded in 2013, designing product and web experiences for B2B companies including Slack, Google and Coca-Cola. Research-driven with premium visual execution. Budgets typically $50,000 - $200,000.

Right for: Enterprise and late-stage SaaS wanting rigorous research plus high-end finish.
Wrong for: Pre-product-market-fit companies. The research depth that justifies the cost needs an existing user base to study.

Ramotion

San Francisco brand and product agency founded in 2009, with work for Firefox, Netflix and GitHub. Occupies a genuinely useful niche between brand identity and product design. Projects typically $50,000 - $200,000+, though focused engagements can start lower.

Right for: Tech companies wanting brand and product from one team - particularly rebrands paired with a product refresh.
Wrong for: Teams needing only a narrow slice of product UX, where you pay for breadth you will not use.

UX Studio

Specialises in B2B SaaS and complex digital systems, with an explicitly research-led approach - understanding the real problem before designing a solution.

Right for: B2B products where the team suspects they are solving the wrong problem and wants that tested properly.
Wrong for: Teams who already know what to build and need execution speed.

Eleken

Ukrainian studio founded in 2015, working exclusively with SaaS companies and declining everything else. Design-only, no development. From around $5,000 a month for a dedicated designer.

Right for: SaaS companies wanting sustained, focused, affordable design capacity with deep category familiarity.
Wrong for: Anyone needing development, brand work, or a bounded one-off project.

Cieden

Focused on making technically dense, intimidating products feel approachable - where the design challenge is comprehension rather than aesthetics.

Right for: Data-heavy B2B platforms, technical tooling, complex dashboards.
Wrong for: Consumer or brand-led work where visual distinctiveness matters most.

Halo Lab

Design-driven development studio founded in 2013 with 200+ people, covering branding, UI/UX, development and MVP builds. One of few teams taking a product from sketch to launched app without external contractors. Pricing spans roughly $6,000 to $400,000.

Right for: Founders wanting design and engineering under one roof, avoiding a vendor handoff.
Wrong for: Teams with strong in-house engineering who only need design.

Orbix Studio

New York studio founded in 2023, roughly 10 - 49 people, charging $50 - $99 an hour with a $10,000+ minimum project size.

Right for: Startups wanting a lower hourly rate with a real team behind it.
Wrong for: Companies needing deep category specialism or a long track record.

Awesomic

Productised subscription service rather than an agency, working with clients including Y Combinator companies, Coca-Cola, Disney, EY and Udemy. Plans start around $500 a month, roughly $2,995 for all-in-one, up to about $5,000 for one-to-one.

Right for: Teams with clear briefs and steady volume who want matched designers without a hiring process.
Wrong for: Product work needing research, stakeholder alignment, or design system governance. We cover this trade-off in design subscription vs design agency.

How to Choose Between Two Finalists

Once budget has narrowed you to a tier, these are the questions that actually separate studios.

  • "Who specifically will do the work, and what else are they on?" Names and allocation. The sell-senior-staff-junior pattern is the most common disappointment at every price point.
  • "What do you think is wrong with our current product?" The single most revealing question. You want a specific, slightly uncomfortable answer. Flattery is a bad sign.
  • "Walk me through a project that went badly." An honest, specific answer signals self-awareness. "We've never had one" signals evasion.
  • "What do you need from us to stay on schedule?" A good studio answers instantly - a named decision-maker, feedback turnaround, user access. See our timeline breakdown for why this determines more than their process does.
  • "What happens to the design system after you leave?" Tests whether they think past delivery.

When reading portfolios, look for evidence of thinking rather than beauty. Empty states, error states, permissions and dense tables are the honest test of whether a studio has designed real products - anyone can make a hero section look good.

The most reliable evaluation is a small paid trial. A two-week UX audit or a single flow tells you more about judgement and communication than any number of calls.

Conclusion

Set your budget floor honestly and it eliminates most of this list immediately. That is the point - a shortlist of two well-matched studios beats a longlist of twelve impressive ones.

Enterprise budget and flagship needs: MetaLab, Work & Co, Instrument or Clay. Brand and product together at scale: Ramotion or Instrument. Design plus engineering in one team: Halo Lab. Ongoing SaaS capacity: Eleken. Research-led B2B: UX Studio. Technically dense products: Cieden. Steady volume on clear briefs: Awesomic.

And if you are seed to Series A, building something genuinely complex in B2B SaaS or AI, and you want product, brand and motion handled by dedicated teams that can also make them cohere - tell us what you are building. If someone else here fits better, we will say so.
